Barristers at Thomas More have acted for governments, blue chip companies and in international disputes ranging in value from the low thousands up to several hundred million pounds. Chambers has experience of litigating in national courts to the very highest levels and also in the most distinguished arbitral tribunals. Our size allows Thomas More Chambers to offer a complete package in relation to commercial work. This includes being able to offer barristers of different levels of seniority, an excellent clerking/ administrative team and state of the art premises. Chambers has considerable experience dealing with sensitive cases, with systems for secure storage of documents, encrypted email and arrangements for reviewing papers on site. Members have a comprehensive understanding of the new costs regimes applicable in commercial cases and are happy to consider and advise upon DBAs and ATE insurance in appropriate cases. In urgent cases, out of hours advice and advocacy is available, particularly in cases requiring freezing orders, search orders and other forms of injunctive relief.


General Commercial Law


Members of Chambers have a wide experience of commercial litigation. Subject matter has included international property investment schemes, consumer contracts, the sale of goods, commercial fraud and large confidential information disputes. Expertise is also available in related areas of regulatory and criminal law, such as financial services and complex financial crime and professional conduct regulation. Chambers has extensive experience in public and administrative law. Members have advised and appeared for Commonwealth Governments and other public bodies, in relation to international commercial disputes, including those involving the conflict of laws, jurisdiction and international enforcement. They are in a position to offer advice at an early stage in respect of choice of jurisdiction clauses and state immunity.


Company/Shareholder/Joint Venture disputes


Members of Chambers are regularly instructed in both contentious and non-contentious company law matters. In addition to advocacy they provide advice and drafting services, for example drafting shareholder agreements and advising and acting in shareholder disputes. They have expertise in cases involving directors’ duties (as they arise both in claims for their breach and in disqualification proceedings), mergers and acquisitions, partnership and joint venture disputes and liquidations, for example disputes about preferences and transactions at an undervalue.


Financial and Banking Law


Members of Chambers have experience of cases involving financial services, commercial bills of exchange and VAT. Chambers receives regular instructions against HM Revenue and Customs at the VAT Tribunal, including in MTIC cases. Members of Chambers are also routinely instructed in cases involving all aspects of mortgage law and related disputes, including drafting charges, and actions to set aside or enforce mortgages.


IT/Communication disputes


Members deal with substantial information technology disputes. These have involved complex issues of copyright and database rights. They have particular expertise in dealing with the VAT treatment of aspects of the telecommunications industry.


Commercial Arbitration


Members of Chambers have experience in commercial arbitration both domestic and international. Chambers is currently instructed before the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC).



Commercial Mediation
